Morning Star Kids: VBS/5-Day Clubs

June 19th - July 28th, 2017

Your responsibility as a 5-Day Club Host:

  • Choose a week to host a club Monday-Friday at your home (indoors or outdoors) or nearby park.
  • Begin inviting children in your neighborhood to attend your club (invitations will be provided).
  • Provide snacks for the kids at your club meetings.
  • Pray for the children and families in your neighborhood.

5-Day Clubs...

  • Provide fun, safe activities kids love!
  • Take VBS "on the road" to reach unchurched children.
  • Effectively tell the children in your neighborhood about Jesus.
  • Help build relationships in your community and welcome new people to our church!

What is a 5-Day Club?

5-Day Clubs are a unique and effective way to reach the kids and families in your neighborhood. For 1 and a half hours each day (Monday-Friday), kids ages 5-12 gather to play high-energy games, hear exciting Bible lessons, missionary stories, and sing upbeat songs that teach unforgettable truths! There's action, fun, and relationships with people who care and want them to know the One who loves them the most - Jesus!

Who Teaches 5-Day Clubs?

Teens and young adults who love both Jesus and children, and desire to serve God, come together from all over Oregon to learn how to lead clubs and teach Bible lessons, songs, memory verses, and missionary stories. They are trained at a week-long training camp called Christian Youth In Action (a Child Evangelism Fellowship ministry). They receive encouragement and hands-on experience with mentors and other like-minded teens. Best of all, they learn how to counsel kids who wish to trust Christ as Savior. With almost 80 years of experience, CEF has developed materials that capture children's attention, teach them biblical truths, and help them understand and respond to the Gospel.

Child Evangelism Fellowship

Morning Star Kids has teamed up with Child Evangelism Fellowship for ministry outreach this summer. CEF is a worldwide, Bible-centered organization composed of believers whose purpose is to evangelize children with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and to establish them in the Word of God and in a local church for Christian living.

CONNECT

July 9th, 2017

If you’ve already been our guest at one of our Sunday services, your next step in getting connected at Morning Star is coming to our Connect event.

No matter who you are, connecting at a larger church can be confusing or even intimidating. But we at Morning Star believe that there is nothing more important than being connected to Jesus and to His church. That’s why we created our Connect event—so people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures can come and find it easy to connect and be a part of God’s family at Morning Star.

At Connect, you’ll have the opportunity to meet other people new to Morning Star and some church staff, as well as learn more about who we are as a church, what we are about, and where you fit into God’s plan here and around the world. We do this in a relaxed atmosphere, with some great food and fun conversation. So take the next step to connect and sign up for the next Connect event. We look forward to seeing you there!

MSK Leader Training: Redirecting Challenging Behavior

July 9th, 2017

We all face this challenge whether we are teachers, caregivers, or friends of children.

Times have changed and the kids have changed along with them. Attention spans have dropped from the old rule of thumb (1 year old=1 minute, 2 years old=2 minutes, and so on) to a maximum of 8 seconds for adults. The number of children diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, autism, or other special needs, has skyrocketed. Many kids have experienced separation from their parents, or stress in their home life that cause them to act out. So how do we reach kids for Christ when we're challenged by behavioral needs?

This training session will focus on how we can redirect challenging behavior whether it's based in defiance or medical diagnosis. We'll discuss how we determine at what point a child needs to be removed from class and/or parents need to be paged. We'll also discuss how our children's staff follow up with families when our volunteers make us aware of their concerns for a child.

Our guest speaker, Rich Mulholland, will help us identify special needs characteristics, common triggers, and helpful tips for refocusing the child while still maintaining order in the classroom. Rich has retired from decades of training others in how to deal with behavioral issues in the classroom, as well as years of working with kids who have special needs. His experience and knowledge will be a great asset to our team and we're excited that he will be sharing the things he has learned through the years.

  • Candace Lute: Nursery/Toddler morning volunteers
  • Crystal Hatton: Preschool/Kindergarten volunteers
  • Spencer Swift: Adventure Mountain volunteers
  • Louie Schmitz: Bridge 45 volunteers
  • Lucy Younis & Emily Zhu: Evening service volunteers and ministry support volunteers

We will meet in the South Auditorium after second service on July 9.

Lunch will be provided.

Sorry, no childcare will be available for this training session.

MSK Leader Training: Effective Evangelism/How to Lead a Child to Christ

July 30th, 2017

What kind of relationship do you have with the children in your care?

The average family attends church 1x per month. The average amount of time we have to develop a relationship with a child at church is 1.5 hours per month, compared to the 40-50 hours per week spent with the average childcare provider. So how do we develop a meaningful relationship that helps our kids come to know and follow Christ?

This training session will focus on the things we can do to make the most of the limited time we have available with our children at church. We'll discuss how we can encourage families to return week after week, how we can make a child feel special and loved at church, and how our classroom activities can be used as a tool to make this happen. We'll also discuss the things our children's staff do to stay in touch with families and the ministry offered to them outside of weekend services.

Our guest speaker, Jeff Wagnell, will teach us how to intentionally and effectively evangelize to children, and how to lead a child to Christ. Jeff is Local Director of Child Evangelism Fellowship's Capitol Chapter and has spent years in the field doing ministry and training others up to evangelize to kids. We're excited that he's agreed to share his expertise with our team, and excited for the way it will help us better serve the children in our care.

The breakout sessions to follow will allow us to discuss how we can apply these principles in our individual classrooms, and give you a chance to address specific concerns you have in your area of service.

  • Candace Lute: Nursery/Toddler morning volunteers
  • Crystal Hatton: Preschool/Kindergarten volunteers
  • Spencer Swift: Adventure Mountain volunteers
  • Louie Schmitz: Bridge 45 volunteers
  • Lucy Younis & Emily Zhu: Evening service volunteers & ministry support volunteers

We will meet in the South Auditorium after second service on July 30.

Lunch will be provided.

Sorry, no childcare will be available for this training session.

This summer, we’re heading to another one of Oregon’s seven wonders . . . the coast!  Enter 2nd annual #yampingtrip at Honeyman State Park in Florence, Oregon.

Let’s take a minute to get out of the heat and take a breath of fresh air!  There are plenty of ways to unwind. . . two lakes to swim in, kayaks, stand-up paddle-boards, hiking galore (there’s literally a trail called “Hobbit Trail”), sand dunes as far as the eye can see, sand boards, and oh yeah, the beach!

We’ll also take the time to learn about how the things we do every day matter. Our habits, activities, and priorities help shape not only the people that we are, but the people we are becoming.  We will take some time to listen to God’s voice, and catch a vision for how He calls His followers to order their lives, do His work, and stay balanced and sane in all of it.

Let’s rediscover what’s most important, together.

Exodus 9

August 6th, 2017

$229 - $329

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. Entirely fed by rain and snowmelt, it is considered to be one of the purest bodies of fresh water on earth. The road up to its rim curves and climbs 7,000 feet while offering some of the best motorcycling in North America.

Welcome to the setting for Exodus 9. The destination for Morning Star’s ninth annual men’s motorcycle rally.

The ride is open to all men who attend and call Morning Star their church home. We encourage you to invite your friends who may not yet have a church home or who do not yet know Christ as Lord. Some among us who know Christ today came to Him through this outreach.

Our seldom-used chase vehicle for emergencies will follow us. Great and inspiring teaching by our own Pastor Chris Meade will lead us.

I can’t wait. Summer. The Cascades. Crater Lake. Motorcycling. And the Spirit of the Living God who made it all. In one weekend? Epic. Join us.
